An appeal by the Parish of St. Nicholas Cathedral, Brisbane for photos and documents relating to the history of the Cathedral and the Russian Community in Brisbane, generally.
The Russian community of Brisbane is about to celebrate the 90th anniversary (1924-2013) of the existence of the first Russian Orthodox parish in Australia and the first, and now heritage listed, Russian Orthodox Cathedral of St. Nicholas. As part of the celebration next year, in 2013, it is planned to publish a photographic history album of the Cathedral and that of the first Russian community. Your help is greatly needed.
We ask that you go through your family albums and archives and share them with the community. Please, do not worry about their quality or content because, while you may think it is of little interest, it could be extremely valuable to this project as an historical document. We have professional restorers who can bring those old photographs and documents back to life. If you know who is depicted on the photos and where they were taken please make a note explaining their content. If not, don’t worry, send them to us anyway because we will be approaching old settlers, librarians, historians, and specialists who will assist to determine the events and the people depicted in the photographs.
We are not asking for the originals of your photos. All we need is a copy which you can send to us by email or post to the Cathedral. If it is a problem for you to make a copy - please phone or email us and we will arrange for a meeting at your home to scan/copy photos and documents.
Many original Russian migrants of the early 1920s (& before) or their descendants may have moved from Brisbane to other cities, so our search for these historic photos and documents extends to all Australian cities. If you are uncertain of some documentary details, then please check with your parents and grandparents. Every photograph, every document found will become part of the history of the Russian community and that of Australia.
Please do not procrastinate! Check your albums and your archives...
What you find may well be a historic photo or document.
The album project is already in the progress, and time is short.
Please respond to our request by December 31, 2012.
